The city of Balakliia is located 100 km southeast of Kharkiv. On February 27, 2022, local residents heard the first explosions — the Russian military shelled an industrial warehouse and private houses. And on March 2, the Russians occupied Balaklia and controlled the city until September 8, 2022. During the occupation, the Russians occupied local schools and a hospital, which they turned into their bases and a hospital. The Balakliia repair plant, where the Russians stationed their military equipment, was also occupied. The occupiers established strict control in the city. They divided the city into three zones and forbade local residents to leave them. The Russians robbed, kidnapped, tortured, and shot the townspeople. They also destroyed private homes and critical infrastructure.
