Hostomel

The road to Kyiv leads through the smaller cities and villages, Hostomel was one of them.

Now it is an urban-type settlement, though it was founded as a town in the 15th century. It is in 7 kilometres from the capital. As of 2020, around 17 thousand people lived there.

“Antonov” cargo airport functions on the territory of Hostomel, used by “Antonov Airlines” aviation company; it serves as a base for flight tests of the “Antonov” state enterprise. In the hangar of the Hostomel airport the AN-225 "Mriya" was parked, the largest aircraft in the world. The plane was significantly damaged during the fighting. The runway of the airfield was destroyed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to prevent enemy planes from landing.

The town was awarded the status of the hero town of Ukraine.
