The way of the Russian army to Kyiv led through the nearby cities. Irpin is in 8 kilometres northwest of the capital city.
Irpin is located on the bank of the eponymous river. It is an ancient town, first mentions of which date from the 17th century. The first 9-storey residential building was erected in the 1970s. In Irpin, there were many people evacuated after the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster, many locals also helped to liquidate the disaster. In the recent years, Irpin experienced a growth spurge: new modern residential complexes were being constructed, new families were moving in. As of 2021, around 67 thousand people lived there.
The bodies of the killed are still being identified in Irpin. As of now, 269 of them have been identified. 30% of the town is in ruins as a result of the hostilities.
The town was awarded the status of a hero town of Ukraine.
