Izium mass grave
Izium, Kharkiv region
After the de-occupation of Izium, mass graves were discovered near the city, in the middle of the forest. Crosses were "hastily" erected on the graves, some have surnames, but most have numbers. Many of the dead were victims of Russian shelling. Also, people died in the city due to the lack of medicine and medical care. However, some of the bodies showed signs of torture, indicating that they may have been tortured by the Russian military before being killed. Also, the graves of Ukrainian soldiers, who were captured by the occupiers during the spring battles for Izium, were discovered on the territory of the burial ground. More than 20 people were buried in one of the graves. According to the ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, whole families of civilians with the same date of death were buried in some graves. During the exhumation, the bodies of 447 people were found in the mass graves of Izium.
