Polovtsian babas on the Kremenets mount
Izium, Kharkiv region
During the occupation of the city of Izium, the Russians destroyed a historical monument, the thousand-year-old Polovtsian women on Mount Kremenets. Only 2 out of 9 stone sculptures survived. One of the sculptures was completely destroyed by the explosion.
The Polovtsian stone women are unique burial stone statues of the Polovtsians (Kipchaks, Kumans), monuments of sacred art of the IX-XIII centuries. They symbolized the ancestors and were placed in sanctuaries specially built for them on the tops of high mounds or hills.
