Mykolaiv
Residential Building
Mykolaiv was one of the important targets of the Russian military, which has been bombing the city since the first days of the full-scale invasion. At first, they shelled airports, later residential buildings, and social infrastructure.
Until the beginning of November 2022, the city suffered almost daily shelling, because the front line was located nearby. 149 civilians, including two children, died in the city from Russian rockets. 698 people were injured, ten of them children. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than half of the population of Mykolayiv left the city, around 230 thousand of the 486 thousand residents remained there.
The Russians caused significant damage to the city's infrastructure, in particular, 874 apartment buildings and 1,070 private houses were damaged. 30 apartment buildings and 70 private buildings were completely destroyed and cannot be restored. Dozens of schools, kindergartens and hospitals, cultural centers, office centers, university premises, and industrial facilities were also damaged.
Mykolaiv became a man-made disaster victim because of the war. On April 12, Russian troops, which controlled the right-bank Kherson region for a long time, destroyed the drinking water supply system of the city. Residents of Mykolaiv were forced to bring water to their apartments in bottles or collect river water for many months.
After the liberation of Kherson, the Russians reduced the number of shelling of Mykolaiv, but it is too early to say that the city is finally safe.
