Russian troops shelled the gymnasium twice: on September 4 and November 1, 2022. As a result of the shelling, the ceilings between the floors of the building collapsed, destroying its central part.
The building of First Ukrainian Gymnasium named after Mykola Arkas is a historical and cultural building of Mykolaiv. It was built in 1892. In the beginning, the first female Mariinsky Gymnasium was located here. After the revolution of 1917, the gymnasium was closed and the building was turned into an administrative office. After Ukraine's Independence, in 1993, the Ukrainian Pedagogical Gymnasium was opened here. Later it was transformed into the Mykola Arkas First Ukrainian Gymnasium of Mykolaiv.
For residents of Mykolaiv, the building is an architectural highlight of the city. It survived the First and Second World Wars without significant damage but was destroyed by the Russians. After the war, the city plans to restore it.
